WHO BENEFITS FROM TOPP ????

In late 1996 Shaw’s Supermarkets announced the implementation of it’s "Non-Union Benefit Package", beginning in January of 1997.

One of the featured "benefits" of this package was TOPP(Time Off with Pay Program).

This program claimed to give the non-union employee all, if not more paid time off than they had previously, and greater "flexibility".

The literature explained that all of the employees paid time off would now be lumped under one heading called TOPP.

TOPP would do away with such terms as "vacations", "sick leave", "holidays", etc.

Under this new plan an employee would have to re-earn their benefit time each and every year.

This was unlike the past practice of receiving your full allotment of benefit time (vacation, sick leave, and personal days) on the 1st of every January.

A quick look at these examples of the "Time Off with Pay Program", compared with UFCW Local 791’s negotiated benefit package, should show exactly who benefits from this program.
