The Active Ballot Club (ABC) is the political arm of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union as well as Local 791. The main function of the ABC is to help ensure that the right people are elected to office at the federal level. The ABC is also utilized in our efforts to educate our members about the connection between politics and union contracts. Members who contribute only twenty five cents or more a week help in the process of making sure our voice is heard in Washington, D.C. It’s an easy way for everyone to participate and get involved in the political process.

Members who contribute to the ABC are investing in their own future. The more money we raise for ABC, the better chance we have of electing officials who will be responsive to the needs and concerns of UFCW members. Decisions made by elected officials affect our lives as much as our union contracts do.

Working people need legislators who are not only supportive of our cause, but will take the necessary action to protect our rights and concerns. It is a fact that the laws passed in Washington D.C. and the State Houses across this country have a direct impact on those basic principles that workers want to join a union in the first place.

Issues:

·         Labor Laws: That protect and enhance our working conditions, enhance our right to organize unions, as well as our collective bargaining rights.

·         Sunday & Holiday Laws - Protect time and one-half pay and keep work voluntary on Sundays and Holidays 

·         Item Pricing Laws - Maintain existing item pricing law to help protect jobs and benefits

·        OSHA - Workplace Safety Laws: Maintain a healthy and secure workplace

·         Health Care: A quality, affordable and accessible health insurance.

·         Pension Protection: Fight any efforts to eliminate or erode our retirement benefits

·         Minimum Wage: A respectable hourly wage for all workers

·         Workmen’s Compensation:  Adequate funds for workers hurt on the job

·         Unemployment Insurance: Adequate funding for workers who lose their jobs

·         Social Security: Protect the futures of our senior citizens.

·        Student Loan Programs: Accessible and affordable for all who wish to further their education.

·        Medicare - Medicaid Benefits: Reform not erode benefits for the elderly and poor.
